What is a HUD home?

What is HUD home? A HUD home is a single family home or other type of residence that is backed by FHA (Federal Housing Administration) and is now in foreclosure. If the owner of the home got an FHA loan/mortgage when he purchased the house, and the house has now gone into foreclosure, it is deeded back to HUD by the lending mortgage company. HUD (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development) becomes the legal owner of the home.
